Most mountain bikers have a loading ritual that involves at least one of the following: a blanket thrown over the tailgate, a bungee cord that never quite reaches, a suspiciously optimistic amount of faith in friction, and at least one dent they don't like to talk about.
There's a better way. Here's exactly how to load your bike cleanly, securely, and fast — using the Bomber Strap Single MTB Pad.
Step 1 — Attach the Bomber Strap to Your Tailgate (30 seconds)
Feed the main nylon strap under your tailgate so the foam pad sits centered on the outside face of the gate. The reinforced section of the strap sits at the bottom edge where the gate would rub. Feed the strap through the aluminum buckle, pull snug, and lock it down. The pad is now fixed to the gate — it won't shift, won't slide, and won't rattle on rough roads.
Step 2 — Load Your Bike (20 seconds)
Lift your bike so the downtube rests on the foam pad and the front fork hangs over the tailgate into the bed. The pad protects the contact point on both the bike and the gate. Position the front wheel where you want it — slightly angled toward the driver's side is typical for most single-bike setups.
Step 3 — Secure the Fork Strap (15 seconds)
Pull the fork strap over the fork leg. The magnetic fidlock buckle guides itself into position and clicks locked in one motion — even with dirty gloves. The fork is now held firmly in place. No wheel rub. No lateral movement. The front of your bike is locked.
Step 4 — Attach the Handlebar Strap (15 seconds)
Loop the handlebar strap around the grip and top tube to prevent the bars from rotating while driving. This is the detail most setups miss — uncontrolled bar rotation puts stress on cables, housings, and your fork seals over time. The Bomber Strap controls it.
You're Done
Total time: under 2 minutes. Your backup camera is clear. Your tailgate handle is accessible. Your hitch is open. Your bike is locked in position and protected on both contact points.
At the trailhead, reverse in with full camera visibility, drop the tailgate, unclip the fork strap and handlebar strap, lift the bike out, unclip the main buckle, roll up the Bomber Strap, and throw it in the cab. Your truck is completely clear and your bike is on the ground — ready to ride.
No pad sitting on your gate all day getting stolen. No dirt collecting behind foam against your paint. No blocked camera on the drive out in fading light.
Just your truck, working the way it was designed to. And your bike, ready for the trail.
